Office for National Statistics (ONS), together with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), are developing natural capital accounts for the UK to offer a comprehensive and consistent framework to organise environmental information so that the benefits of nature are better recognised. Urban green spaces are a type of natural asset that provide society with a range of benefits. Recently published urban ecosystem accounts estimate almost one-third of urban area in Great Britain consists of natural land and green space. However, urban areas can also encompass a variety of natural landscapes and biodiversity. Over 1.7 million hectares of urban area exist in Great Britain, defined by high population density and built infrastructure.
